Some Good News

And some good news to report.

Last Friday both my DM15c from Swiss Micros and a Nagoya 16 inch whip VHF/UHF antenna were delivered to my home. The calculator, as noted in my earlier post, was meant to be a Christmas present and was ordered from Switzerland weeks before, but was held up somewhere with Canada Post and came about 2/3rds in January.

The antenna is a highly suggested addition to my Baofeng 5RM handheld radio that I have been using to get familiar with traffic and repeaters in my local area. The antenna itself is wonderful and works very well. Now I am slowly working on my amateur radio license so that I can engage in some of the interesting nets that happen regularly. So far I've been tracking a Canada-wide net that takes place across a series of repeaters every weekday morning at 8 am in addition to a local net with repeaters all across the island. These nets are great because people give a short blurb about what they are up to for the day or what the weather is like where they are which is particularly interesting, even just to listen to. Another one that I've found and have enjoyed being around to listen to each evening is the Insomnia Net which takes place on a network spanning the whole continent called the WIN system. They do trivia starting at 10pm every single day of the year and people from all around Canada and mostly the United States check in and share answers. There are regulars that are fun to listen to and wait for checking in and newcomers every night. I can't wait to be a newcomer myself and check in whenever I am available.

The calculator is truly wonderful. It is a credit card sized version of the hugely popular HP15C RPN advanced-scientific calculator. It is not as thin as a credit card, you cannot fit it into a wallet and no would you want to really. The height and width of the device is credit card sized, roughly the width of the LCD screen from the original device. It has very nice upgrades include a new, much faster processor that emulates the old NUT processor of the HP device. You can also choose two different speeds for this processor to extend battery life when not doing intensive calculations. The LCD screen is a very large and clear dot-matrix display which several font options designed by the Swiss Micros team.

Even more wonderful is a two-line display option that shows two of the four RPN stack registers on the display at all times. This is great because you can see the two figures being manipulated by an operand and I like to use the two-lines for answers that programs produce to provide more context. For example, for my g-force braking program, the user can input speed in km/h and the desire g-force experienced by passengers and the program produces the time in seconds for the brake event in the y-register and the braking event distance in m in the x-register. Both items are useful for learning and planning and both can be displayed upfront and clearly in a two-line display.

The calculator also has a library of units for conversions and common constants used across several scientific disciplines. This is an exceedingly nice feature packed into such a small device. Which brings me to the whole point. I already own a DM32 RPN calculator that has an even more beautiful and large four-line display and a way more processor with way more precision for intense mathematical calculations in the palm of one's hand. But the DM32 is not really meant for the field, not for me at least. It it a home device or an office device but not an in the bus, on the road, out and about kind of device. But the very small DM15c is such a device. The perfect everyday carry that packs a very powerful punch.

And that's all about that I have by way of good news for the moment.

IRS again...

My email of things coming in the regular mail says that today there is yet another letter from the fucking IRS. I have no clue what they want now but it better not be money.

Also, ironically, I heard from the CPA about my taxes. Initially, I talked to Jeff and he did my two amended returns. Then last year, my return was done by an underling who never did get with the program. She refused to use emails and I refuse to discuss shit over the phone. It was not a happy pairing so I figured I'd use them one last year and then go back to doing it myself.

I got about 60% of what I needed and uploaded it to their secure server. My plan was to upload the rest, along with their contract hiring them to do the work, when 'the rest' came in. BUT I got an email from Jeff this morning that he had started my return and had questions. 1. HE was doing it himself. 2. He had questions and so sent an email (BLESS HIS HEART) and 3. His questions were all covered on the stuff I hadn't uploaded yet so it shows me, I've got it all under control. I'm pretty sure I overpaid my estimated taxes so should owe nothing except estimated taxes for next year.

But, then there is that letter... arugh.

We lost a Susan Dennis this week. Age 70, died peacefully in her home in Grimsby on the eastern shore of England. Google sends me these bon mots at my request and I'm always so relieved that the dead Susan Dennis is not me.

OHHHHH We have an emergency!!! There is a blast coming over the speakers saying to shelter in place and stay there until told otherwise. Jim Across The Hall just popped out. I knew he would so I told him to go back in and stay there until I came to get him. I put OK signs on the floor outside our doors. This is not a drill so there is going to be lots of CONVERSATION. Edit: apparently it was a test or not, who knows. but so far no smoke or guns visible.

I gave myself the second Wegovy shot this morning. I must have held it differently or something cause this time it hurt! Of course it stopped hurting the minute I pulled the needle out so no big deal. I did it in my alive thigh. I have a large patch of numb on my other thigh where I did the shot last week. I'm going back there next week.

So far the stuff seems to be working. I do not feel differently. Volleyball is fine, swimming is fine, walking is fine. The rest is fine. I am still hungry for meals but I have, gratefully, really lost my snacking chops. Last month, I could happily sit down with a coke and a bag of Cheetos at nearly anytime of the day. Now, I am just not interested. I keep Apple quarters in the fridge and have one of those with a slice of cheese. Maybe. I have uncrustables now for breakfast or sometimes oatmeal. I have ham and cheese croissants for lunch and not much for dinner - sometimes a protein shake. I'm clearly operating on a lot fewer calories than before but my brain is fine with it. So. Yeah.

Ok, they have quit screaming the emergency instructions and I don't see any smoke. Wonder wtf is going on. Armed robbery? Armed takeover? I just pinged Martha. Someone just left the garage in a car. I'm thinking that's not very Shelter In Place-ing.

I've done a pivot on the eastern bunny situation. I like the ones below but they are just way too fiddly. I have a new design that is much more interesting to do and I can make a bunch in a reasonable amount of time.

Rabbit Hole Thursday

This never happens

#
Thursday. Sunny and cold.

Firefly came to join my in the comfy chair this morning, and spent some time gazing up into my face, and kneading, and rubbing her cheek on my hand, and offering her chin and belly for rubs. She's never this demonstrative. After she had expressed her devotion, she curled up on my lap and went to sleep, which, yes, also never happens. She'll sleep next to me on the couch or on the bed, but she hasn't been a lap-sitter.

Needless to say, I spent an extended time in the chair, thinking thoughts, and trying just to Breathe. It was nice. She did finally stretch and jumped down, with a very high tail, and we both got something to eat.

Before I forget: Chocolate tea is much improved by a dash of half-and-half, but I think it will not become a favorite with me.

Today, I am on FedEx Watch. They're being cagey, and will only say that the package is on a truck and will be delivered "today." They usually come by between 11 and noon -- in fact, yesterday's note was left at 11:11, so -- fingers crossed. I don't, of course, dare to go into the back of the house or downstairs, but it's not like I don't have things to do.

. . . like go down the rabbit hole of new Motorola phones, because I have never bonded with the free Pixel 9 Pro. I mean, it's a phone, and it does the phone-like things that I need done. It weighs too much, and it gulps down battery power like a chimp with a crate of bananas, but apparently all the new phones are power-hogs, and Seven! Days! Between! Charges! is a thing of the oh-so-long-ago.

I was briefly tempted by the Moto G Power, but -- yanno, the Pixel works, and whatever it did yesterday to produce that spark of "Yanno? You can be replaced." has already faded.

So, late getting started here at the Cat Farm and Confusion Factory -- call it half a writer's day off. I do very much need to call the CPA, and work on my talk for the Waterville Public Library in a couple weeks. And play with my new tablet if/when it arrives.

Realsoonnow, I'm going to have to start doing my read of the WIP, but that can wait another day or two. I also need to put some serious thought into how I expect to stay solvent after this contract is finished -- that was one of the subjects Firefly and I touched on. She likes this house, as I do, and wanted to make sure I wasn't thinking about moving. I'm not. I mean, yeah, it's too big for one old woman and three cats, because ghosts don't take up that much room, but the reasons for the house -- this house (all on one level, in town, near shopping, the cats' vet, and the not-exactly-a-hospital) -- are still good. Plus the ghosts. Steve put a lot of care into making this a Lee-and-Miller History House.

So, that's where I am at mid-morning.

How's everybody doing?

I think I’ve finally found a few promising candidates for a new tape deck, and I’ve been diving into the Toshiba ADRES noise‑reduction system. Most of this gear is going to need a full recap—the old capacitors have long since dried out—but that’s part of the charm of resurrecting vintage audio.

What really hits me, though, is how much I wish I had known back when I was making all those recordings and mixtapes. The things I’m learning now—about tape formulations, head alignment, noise‑reduction quirks, and the hidden strengths and weaknesses of the cassette format—would have taken my work to a whole different level. But without anyone to guide me, I never understood the real opportunities or the limitations of the medium.

Better late than never. This whole initiative has become a kind of retroactive education, and every discovery feels like unlocking a piece of the past I didn’t know I was missing.

Click for a larger, sharper image

I had to go to the medical centre for a routine blood test and quick check-up today. Happily the weather was much better than yesterday, so I didn't get drenched on the walk into town. It was all very quick as there were only about three people in the waiting room. Still, it gave me something to take a photo of! This is the main entrance. I've almost never been upstairs, as all the services I need are provided on the ground floor. In a very civilised touch, there's an indoor passage from the waiting room through to the public library off to the right.

Wednesday. Sunny and cold. Minus three F when I got up. Minus 1 as I sit here in the comfy chair in my office overlooking the Long Back Yard with Tali on my lap, taking full advantage of the electric blanket.

FedEx seems quite sure that my package, which even it acknowledges I have to sign for, will be delivered tomorrow.  I have no less than three emails in my inbox assuring me that this is the case.  So! That means today I'll be going to the grocery and the post office and do another errands out in the world, after it gets a little warmer.

Breakfast, when I get around to it, will be oatmeal with something. I still have chocolate chips, I think and I certainly have almond butter.

Right now I'm drinking a cup of chocolate tea, which is interesting, but probably needs milk. Well, I'm going to the grocery today. I'll pick up some creamer. The possession of tea infusers has widened my horizons considerably.

I'm feeling a bit less oppressed today which is a good thing. This is usually the result of taming piles, so well done, me.

I think that's all I've got.

How's everybody holding up?

#
All righty, then!

Breakfast et, first load of laundry drying, email answered, some phone calls made -- haircut, annual check-up appointment for Firefly, PT -- blinds ordered.

Time to put on my boots and go do some errands in the sunny 17F-feels-like-6F day.
#
So, FedEx, which swore three times in my email that it would be delivering my package tomorrow, Thursday, February 29, so I arranged to go out today so I could be home tomorrow to receive and sign for that package?

Yep, came home to find a note on my door from FedEx: "Sorry we missed you!"

A company that can't even keep track of its own schedule is ... useless. As I explained at length to poor Muhammed, who won my phone call.

The theory is that they will try again tomorrow. I just hope nobody decides to use the package for a football in the meantime.

Here have a portrait of the snowbank along my driveway.  Subaru provided for scale.

Well, except for the paperwork I haven't gotten yet, I think I'm finished the tax questionnaire. I still need to double/triple check, get hold of the Actual Accountant who will be working with this form, and then input everything into the Blessed Portal, but for values of having gathered all the information, I'm done.

February has somehow become completely full with appointments for me and the cats, which is -- kind of astonishing.

In other news, I thought I'd gotten off easy yesterday what with SnowJoeing the deck. May I just say -- Ow? Back, arm, knees, shoulder, wrists and hands.

I have achieved an item for my When It Gets Warm Enough to Walk Up and Down on the Earth List -- I wanna take an alpaca for a walk, and it turns out that I can do that right up in Unity.

I've had Tali with me all afternoon. Rook was holding down Steve's office for most of the day, but just recently came in to quiz me on my progress with the taxes before he took over my chair in the dining room. Firefly . . . Firefly has apparently been reading Belle's Book. She located the heated and often-sunny bottom shelf in the built-in bookcase that Belle used to favor and has been tucked in very contentedly napping since just before lunch.

I b'lieve that the last load of towels has just finished drying, which means the only laundry left to do -- tomorrow! -- will be the cat blankets. Progress, so they tell me.

Everybody have a good evening. Stay safe.

I'll check in tomorrow.

I'm not going to swim today cause I don't wanna. I have other stuff I want to do. I could do both but nah.

I have a new bunny idea currently in production. I have some sewing I need to do. And then there is just regular day stuff like emptying the dishwasher and tidying up.

Biggie is being a bit weird today - actually, they both are. I did not get up until 6:30 and they were both sound asleep still. Usually they are making noise and jumping on me.

The Mariners announced the broadcast team for this season. Same asshats as last year. There is one guy who is not too painful to listen to and he's retiring after this year and going to be replaced by one of the ones who is very painful to listen to. So for sure, I have many years of crappy Mariners broadcasts ahead of me. Sigh. We also don't know yet what the broadcast streaming situation will be or rather how much it will cost. We had our own sports network and they folded and MLB.TV took over. That's either going to be ok or horrible. And no clue yet what it's going to cost. Spring training is doing a trickle start. It's not official for about 2-3 more weeks but they are gathering.

My closet/dressing room is complete. It's cozy and tidy and sooo functional. I did get a request for review from Closets by Design but I declined. I don't hate what they did but they sure could have done a less sloppy job and been less irritating about the whole thing, not to mention way cheaper. But I do love the end result and that's the real joy. I've never had anything like it. Like a whole lot of kids, I was totally into tents, and my room and cozy little spaces all my own. This is the grown up adult version of that.

I’m seriously considering going all‑in on a tape deck just to see how far I can push the technology and the techniques. eBay is doing its best to break my spirit—every search feels like spelunking in a cave full of “untested, probably works” listings—but I think I’ve unearthed a few Type IV‑capable decks worth experimenting with.

The plan is to run the whole thing into my HomePods as a stereo pair, so no towering retro hi‑fi stack for me. Just a tape deck, some questionable mid‑life choices, and the sheer joy of seeing how ridiculous this can get.

La neige, ça continue.

Like a cat playing with its lunch, next week’s weather forecast is toying with me. This morning it promised 30 cm on Monday; the update 50 minutes later shrugged and said, “Actually… maybe 7.”

Film post: Paddington in Peru (2024)

Paddington in Peru (2024) film poster
Paddington in Perue (2024)

I have an enormous soft spot for Paddington, having grown up on his stop-motion shorts – which at their best are glorious. The big-screen series has largely kept his charm, but Paddington in Peru is definitely the weakest of the trilogy. Admittedly the superb Paddington 2 was a hard act to follow, but this third instalment sometimes feels like it's trying too hard. Perhaps the change of director had something to do with that. I don't especially mind the casting change for Mrs Brown: yes, Sally Hawkins did a wonderful job, but Emily Mortimer's version of the character is still fine. Julie Walters as Mrs Bird is unsurprisingly excellent, too.

The real problem is that it feels rather by-the-numbers. Look, the Brown family are growing up and drifting apart, what a fantastically original setup! Hey, they're going on a big adventure that may just bring them back together and lead them to realise what family truly means! And so on. You can get away with that, but only if the execution is perfect, which it isn't. It all feels very linear compared with its predecessor, and far too much of it is predictable almost from the start. It's not as funny as Paddington 2, either. I don't want to make out this is a bad movie. It's not. As a family film it's warm and agreeable, just like Paddington himself. I just hoped for more. ★★★
