Assignments are out! A few reminders below.
Feb. 2nd, 2026 06:51 pmCheck your cubby holes, letter boxes, under your doormats, your pockets and wherever else you happen to receive your mail because… your assignment is here!
Please contact me if:
- Your assignment does not match your offers. Please email gumshoeagency@gmail.com with your AO3 name, your recipient's AO3 name, and a description of the issue so I can sort this out for you. Please do this ASAP.
- You have questions for your recipient! Please email gumshoeagency@gmail.com with your AO3 name, your recipient's AO3 name, and your question. If you'd like to send dummy questions through because you want your gift to be a surprise, please feel free to do this.
Assignments are due on Friday 1 May at 11:59PM EDT. [ In your timezone + Countdown ]
Please ensure you post to our AO3 collection and that your work has a recipient!
A few reminders:
- If you need a refresher, please review the rules/guidelines. I recommend reviewing about assignments, our medium requirements, posting, extensions, and defaulting. If you're interested in treating, please review the treating section of our guidelines for minimum requirements.
- Please unlock and complete letters by Monday 9 February so your creator and anyone looking to treat you can access your additional information. I will not be deleting letters from sign-ups or emailing participants about these.
- Please do not include any self-deprecating comments in your author's note and any identifying information, such as social media links. I will not be accepting works into the collection that contain any of these. Be proud of your work! Such notes negatively impact the recipient's experience and set a tone for the work that is not true!
You can add your social media links once the exchange is over! (I highly encourage you to do this! Just don't do it now.) - The collection is moderated. I cannot access drafts, so please be sure to press "submit" when your work is completed.
I will review these to ensure that they match the request and meet the bare minimum requirements (i.e. completed work, no copy/pastes of the same word over and over, etc.). If you find your work is sitting in the moderation queue for more than three days, please email me your AO3 name and the title of your work so I can check to see if I have simply misread it as a draft.
Once your work has been accepted, you are welcome to continue editing it until the assignment deadline. I will only be accepting works that are completed, so please do not mistake this to mean that you can submit a half-created piece of work. It needs to be complete and able to go live at any moment!
Please ensure you do not accidentally delete half your assignment as I may not be able to catch this at the time of reveals. (Save a copy of your assignment somewhere!) - You are allowed to gift to the collection a work that fits a fandom and relationship that was nominated but not requested. (If you are aware of my AO3, please do not add me as a recipient to it.) Please make sure to leave a comment in your author's note that this is a gift for the collection so I know not to email you asking if you forgot to add your recipient. (Once accepted, feel free to remove your author's note.)
- We have an extension deadline, which is Friday 15 May at 11:59pm EDT. This is the only extension that will be given. (Extenuating circumstances are excepted. Pinch hits taken after this deadline may receive an extension depending on where we are at in the last phase.)
- We have a deadline for non-guaranteed requests to add fandoms to meet the 3 unique fandoms minimum requirements, which is Friday 15 May at 11:59pm EDT. I will not be accepting any additions to requests after this date. Please only reach out if you are a pinch hit.
- If you are a pinch hit and you find that you have remained unclaimed for a few weeks, you are more than welcome to email me at gumshoeagency@gmail.com with additional requests. I will update your sign-up when I am about to post pinch hits, so please be aware you may end up claimed before then! (It's happened!)
I ask that the Casefic Exchange community remains positive about pinch hits; being a pinch hit is a great opportunity to be selected by a sleuth who didn't have time to sign up for the round, but still wishes to craft you a deliciously creative case to solve! - Please whitelist gumshoeagency@gmail.com as my emails are finding themselves getting cosy in some junk folders! If your creator has a question, you'll definitely want to answer!
What's coming up next:
- Initial pinch hits will be posted in 24-48 hours.
- A beta post.
- A pinch hitter's treats post.
Thank you again to everyone for being so enthusiastic about the exchange! Have fun being devious! 🩷
- Commissioner Clawseau

Feb. 2nd, 2026 01:32 amEvery mammal, every fish, every vertebrate (creatures that have a spine) has two eyes. It’s been that way for millions and millions of years. But maybe it wasn’t like that forever.
During the Cambrian, when evolution was experimenting all sorts of strategies, early vertebrates may have had four eyes, and they were high-res eyes, too.

Day 1 - Fic - Doctor Who - Victoria Waterfield
Feb. 2nd, 2026 02:32 amFandom: Doctor Who (1963)
Character: Victoria Waterfield
Prompt: The Innocent
Rating/Category: T/Gen
Summary: The reality of the situation settles in as Victoria walks into her new room. Her life as she knew it is over.
Never go home
The reality of the situation settles in as Victoria walks into her new room. Her life as she knew it is over.
Everything happened so fast that she didn’t even have the time to think until now. Then she reaches her room in that impossible ship, and it’s so completely ordinary, maybe the first thing resembling normalcy that she had since being attacked.
It doesn’t look like her room, but it’s close enough to it, like it could be the room of any girl that she knows, like it could have been her room, and now it is. It’s thoughtful that they gave her a room like this, the only thing around there that feels like it might fit with her home and her life, but it only serves to make more evident the fact that she’ll never come home again, and even if she did, there’s nothing left for her there. Not anymore.
The Daleks took it all from her, and although the Doctor and Jamie have been kind to her, now that she’s alone it’s impossible not to think of how her father is gone and she’ll never see him again, she’ll never see her home again, she’ll never see a single person that she knew before again. She has never even been abroad, and now she’s on a ship running away from monsters, with the strange man that her father entrusted her care to and the brave boy who protected her.
She has never felt so lost, and she’s equal parts excited for the adventure that she has just started and terrified that she’ll encounter monsters like those again. Everything now is just so unknown, and the only thing that she can be sure of is that her life is never going to be the same again.

prescience
Feb. 2nd, 2026 12:00 amMerriam-Webster's Word of the Day for February 2, 2026 is:
prescience \PRESH-ee-unss\ noun
Prescience is a formal word used to refer to the ability to see or anticipate what will or might happen in the future.
// He predicted the public's response to the proposed legislation with remarkable prescience.
Examples:
"... novelists have always faced technological and social upheaval. They have mostly addressed it in one of two ways. The first is to imagine an altered future with the prescience of science fiction; Mary Shelley's warning that humans are not always in control of their creations is, if anything, even more resonant today than when Frankenstein was first published in 1818." — Jessi Jezewska Stevens, The Dial, 2 Dec. 2025
Did you know?
If you know the origin of science you already know half the story of prescience. Science comes from the Latin verb sciō, scīre, "to know," also source of such words as conscience, conscious, and omniscience. Prescience has as its ancestor a word that attached prae-, a predecessor of pre-, to this root to make praescire, meaning "to know beforehand."

I hate my computer
Feb. 1st, 2026 11:16 pmAnyway, I had breakfast and coffee and then tried to go to the Starsky and Hutch creative work session. It was a nightmare with the computer. I would get in, freeze up entirely. the computer wouldn't load, pages would go unresponsive... I ended up restarting the computer multiple times and logging out and signing back in even more often. I hate this computer.
Finally though I got in with a stable connection, and had a good time. I even got some writing done.
We chatted til somewhat after 6:00 and then got off, and at 7:00 I Teamed the FWiB. That worked out better.
We talked for a little over an hour, then got off, and at 8:30 I called Middle Brother. He is fine, got his hair cut yesterday, and is looking forward to Groundhog Day, and Valentine's Day.
Then I figured out how to deposit the money that John and Denise Zelled me for the cottage account and also deposited my first installment of what I owe on the cottage for the year. Then I emailed everyone about it.
Then I had dinner, and went to the bedroom and called
Then I fed the pets, late, and started here.
Gratitude List:
1. The FWiB.
2. The Starsky and Hutch fandom.
3. I finally got the computer working.
4. The cottage, expensive as it is.
5. Friends.
6. Family.

Review: "Maple Syrup: 40 Tried & True Recipes"
Feb. 1st, 2026 09:50 pmPaperback – Lay Flat, February 11, 2020
by Corrine Kozlak (Author), Kevin Scott Ramos (Photographer)
Today we finished reading our first cookbook of the year. \o/ We bought this just a couple weeks ago at the small farm show. Our friends at Golden Ridge Farms had their maple root beer and also these cookbooks. I had just seen a different book that was mostly history and only a few recipes, so when I spotted this one, I pounced on it. The front matter includes a table of contents, Preface, Tree to Table, Maple Syrup History, How Maple Syrup Is Made, Maple Syrup Grading, Sugar Shack Fun, Do-It-Yourself Maple Syruping or Backyard Sugaring, and Cooking and Baking with Maple Syrup. The recipe chapters are Breads and Breakfast, Entrees, Sides, Sweets and Desserts, Appetizers and Beverages. The index in the back does include both ingredients and titles, but is not greatly detailed.
